Shotgun Wedding

Shotgun Wedding - by Lara B.

Talk about a blast from the past, Arr Arr.  This is a quilt I made two years ago, from a Lynda Hall pattern.  Since I am currently eyeball deep in Things That Can't Be Shown Yet (because the giftees might see it too soon if I post it here) I thought it would be fun to share this instead.

There probably isn't a quilting style I don't like or love.  It is so fun to see what people are creating on their blogs and I must have a bucket list a mile long now.  I do have a predilection though for warm, autumny colors, especially reds.

This particular quilt is one of my favorites because of both the colors and the pattern.  It is done in 1800's reproduction fabrics and might be considered a primitive scrappy / country style piece.  Like a lot of Lynda's patterns though, if you change the fabrics up , you could easily have a more modern style quilt.

I was insecure about getting the pieces to line up right, so I converted the pattern into a paper piecing pattern and also tweaked it so that the starburst points went further, into the outer border.  This quilt was a lot of fun to make, so much so that I hope to remake it someday!  Usually I just want to move on and try something new.  Are you like that?  Or do you prefer to make a few versions of each quilt you make?

Click on this link: Lynda Hall's Quilt Patterns, if you would like to have a few chuckles.  The way she names her quilt patterns and the little stories she comes up with to go with the patterns sure tickle my funny bone!  "One Ringy Dingy", "Jeepers Creepers", and "Holy Matchimony Thing" are just a few that crack me up.  I would love to meet Lynda in person; she must have a great sense of humor.

Although I am braver now, at the time, I was too lily-livered to try quilting the top after I got it pieced, so I gladly turned it over to my friend Julie DeGrave to quilt.  She did a fabulous job, as always.

Here are two pictures, so you can see how even the most straightforward quilting really brings a quilt to life:

Shotgun Wedding: the flimsy, before quilting.
Shotgun Wedding: sunlit so you can see Julie's quilting.

Thanks for visiting and come back soon!

  1. Your little tweaks made this one even more eye-catching. The straight line quilting is very effective too. I hope you're having fun with your secret sewing and will reveal all in good time!

  2. I'm glad you didn't follow the pattern exactly. It's always fun to see the personal twists people put on similar patterns.

  4. Great quilt! Love the design and the name!! There are quilts that I have made a second time... some even a third. I love to see how different a pattern is made from different fabrics. It doesn't help with the bucket list quilts, though. They keep getting pushed down the line. :)

  6. Showing us the quilts you've made before you started this blog is an excellent idea. I also love the colors used in the quilt of this post. I cannot imagine how you managed to change the pattern for a pp pattern. I guess you must have a good experience in pp to be able to do that. Maybe I'll understand in a few years. ;-) I have never made the same quilt twice. By the time I finish one, my mind is already centered on another.

  7. I really love that straight line quilting. Thanks for sharing the before quilting photo; you can really tell what impact the quilting has on the overall visual effect.

  8. Wow, the quilt is wonderful and the quilting really finishes it perfectly. I never like to remake a quilt, I'm always on to something new and exciting.

  10. I haven't remade a quilt pattern, but I'm notorious for making the same bags over and over again. I like how you extended the star bursts here. Actually, it's the first thing I noticed about the quilt. Replicating that feature with more modern fabrics throughout the quilt would certainly create a different project altogether!

  11. Beautiful quilt Lara! The only quilt I have ever remade was the Double Slice Layer Cake by Missouri Star. Not sure why I remade that one . . . it was in the very beginning of my quilting journey. I haven't since but I am going to remake the double star quilt I just did in colors that I love! :)

I checked out Lynda's patterns. . . I got a particularly good chuckle out of Ewe Old Bags! LOL

  13. I love your little tweaks- in fact I like even that you do change things a bit rather than exactly following the pattern. It would be interesting to see this made in different fabrics too.

  14. What a beautiful quilt and yes, quilting always adds a lot. Me.....I sometimes enjoy a quilt more than once. I just finished 3 identical scrappy quilts for the grandkids......nothing fancy though.

  18. Whoa, are you ever right about the quilt coming to life, even with simple straight-line quilting. I NEED to remember this! Love what you did to tweak the pattern; it is just beautiful and looks so cuddly.

  22. Gorgeous! And I am loving that you "shored up " the pattern with your tweaks to bring it to perfection!! Isn't it great when the pieces all fit together perfectly in a paper pieced pattern?!! You are so right about how the quilt comes to life with the quilting. I love the stars in the center of the blocks... they just pop out!! And it is such a pretty addition to make the blocks extend out into the border!

  23. Love this! The quilting really brings out the pattern too. I like how there are parts that extend past the stop border.
