Crafted Appliqué: New Possibilities Blog Hop - Week Three Giveaway!

We're heading into week three in the Crafted Appliqué: New Possibilities Blog Hop!  The first two weeks were so much fun and if you are just joining us, it's definitely worth checking out the previous blog hop stops.  This week is going to be super exciting too.  You'll hear more about what people think of the book and also get a chance to see more terrific projects using the Crafted Appliqué method.  It's really thrilling to see how many of you are trying it out and then letting your own creativity fly with new ideas!

The blog hop calendar is shown at the end of this post.  All the blog titles are live links, which I will keep updating as participants post their reviews.  You'll have a chance to win a free copy of "Crafted Appliqué: New Possibilities" at every stop!  Plus, today here on BuzzinBumble I'm holding another brand new giveaway.  (More on that in just a minute.)

Folk Art Christmas

But first, it's time to show you another one of the book projects.  This one is called "Folk Art Christmas" and it is a small wall quilt with a tree fashioned with two lovebirds, pomegranates, leaves and berries.  Want to hear something funny?  I drew the two birds way back when I was in high school and happened to save the sketch all those years.

"Folk Art Christmas" by Lara & Alina Buccella
Quilted by Valerie Smith

This pattern reflects my love of many different traditional folk arts.  I designed it as a way to put the Crafted Appliqué technique fully to the test.  It passed with flying colors: All those little stems and berries... all those curvy shapes and fine cut outs... and No Fraying!  (If you click on the close up picture below, you'll be able to see for yourself.)

In addition, our daughter Alina was home visiting and I asked her to test out how difficult this would be for a newbie to sew this pattern.  She had sewn straight seams, but had never sewn on an applique or tried to follow curved edges before.  Well she rose to the challenge and by sewing slowly and carefully, she completed the whole lower half of the quilt in one sitting. Way to go Beana!

My friend Valerie Smith, aka Pumpkin Patch Quilter quilted "Folk Art Christmas" for me with the tiniest McTavishing style quilting.  It's next to miraculous!  I met Valerie through The Quilting Board, when she posted there about her gorgeous Heirloom Christmas Stockings.  This is the best photo I have to show off Valerie's quilting.  Her fabulous quilting made the appliques appear as if they were trapunto and it brought the whole quilt to life!

Kona Cotton Solids Color Card Giveaway

One of the best things about quilting is getting to play with fabrics and color.  Appliqué quilting, in particular, gives you the opportunity to get creative with fabric almost as if you are using a paint box full of color.  So week three's giveaway is a Kona Cotton Solids Color Card - with swatches of 303 beautiful colors from Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

1.  To enter for a chance to win a color card, simply leave a comment on this post.  Just for fun, tell us when you made your first quilt.   Did someone finagle you into trying it, like I did to Alina?

2.  BuzzinBumble followers, both new and old, can have a second chance to win by leaving a second comment and letting me know how they follow me.  (If we already chat back and forth a lot and you follow me, just say "Hi Lara!" in your second comment... I don't want to make you jump through more hoops.)

Everyone is welcome to enter the giveaway contest and I'm willing to ship internationally.

All the giveaways here on BuzzinBumble will run right up until the end of the Crafted Appliqué: New Possibilities Blog Hop.  Winners will be randomly drawn on June 4th and I'll announcing the winners during the final post of the hop on June 5th.  If you'd like to see the first two giveaway contests, there is still time to enter!

Just check here:

Please - If you are a no-reply blogger, remember to leave your e-mail address so that I will have a way to contact you if you win.

And now... without further ado:  Here is the calendar with all the fabulous Blog Hop Participants!

  1. I made my first bed sized quilt (a full size) while I was in college. All sewn and pieced by hand. I was taking an art class and we had to make something for our final project that was 3-D and quilts were considered 3-D so I made the Grandmother's Fan quilt set in the Mohawk Trail setting using brown calicoes and muslin. I was dating the man who later became my husband and whenever we went on a drive or trip somewhere, I would be hand sewing or later quilting on that quilt. After we had married over a year later, it was our bed quilt for years until we got a larger bed. That quilt has fond memories for me of our dating and the places we traveled to when we lived in California.

  2. Made my first quilt about 40 years ago...a pinwheel for a friend's new baby.

Your Folk Art Christmas is beautiful! Both parts so intricate-they work well together.

  5. I made my first quilt using homespun. I needed zillions of tiny half square triangles and that fabric just stretched and frayed. I can't believe that I ever even finished that one and didn't quit immediately after!

  10. I made my first quilt for my son in 1975. I enlarged a colouring book page of a lion and once it was done it was the shape of a lion with a mane and all. At about 45 x 54 it is all poly/cotton with a flannel backing. The backing had to be replaced but the top looks almost new. After years of use it is tucked away for a future grandchild. No luck yet.

  11. Hi Lara. I'm stitching my first quilt now. A combo of my love of sewing and embroidery.

  12. I made my first quilt 10 years ago and am still in love with each and every part of quilting. My Father had made a ton of quilts for relatives while he was adjusting to life as a retired car mechanic. It really fascinated me and pretty soon, I could not resist and had to give it a try. LOL.

I do follow you by bloglovin and email!

  14. My first quilt was a "quillow" - it folded into its own pocket and changed from quilt to pillow. I didn't think of it as quilting at the time - just sewing. That would have been over 20 years ago, now. Woo! Time flies!!!
The quilting on your project suits it perfectly. Sometimes it pays to hold on to artwork forever! I still have the sketchbooks I used in grade ten, and even several of my assignments! Nice work, Lara (and your helper, too!)

  15. I commissioned a friend to make a special quilt for my granddaughters 5th birthday(she is 9 now), I was so disappointed in the quilt that I took lessons and started making and designing my own. Best thing I have ever done. I had never even sew before and now I can make anything I want. I have many wonderful women in my life now, thanks to quilting. Thank you for the giveaways, always fun to get inspiration.

  16. I don't remember exactly when it was, but it was when catalogs came in the mail with patterns for sale, and you had to call or mail your order in! I saw a pattern for a Christmas tree wall quilt and just decided I wanted to make it. I had only sewn clothes, crafts, and window treatments at that point. But my MIL was nearby and I knew she could help me if I had trouble making it. It probably wasn't the best pattern choice for someone without quilting skills, but I finished it -- and it put me on the path to bigger things!

  17. Your book is so awesome, this Christmas design was one of my favorites.

  18. I've always been a sewist but...quilting...not so much. I did make a bedspread that you could call a quilt (I guess.) many years ago but I generally say I started quilting about 2007 - just on my own.

  26. My first quilt? A man-sized trip around the world nap quilt made in 2003 for my hubby. That was before I knew anything about 1/4 inch seams, binding or avoiding a mix of polyester fabrics with cottons. I've come a long way - enough to look longingly at that Kona card (tentatively added to many a shopping cart, but never purchased).

  40. I pieced my first quilt top when I was in middle school (long time ago!). I entered it in the 4-H craft show and won 1st place. My mom sold it to a lady to help buy me school clothes. We were pretty poor so through the winter months, I helped her piece quilt tops to sell. In the summer, they did truck farming. I still love sewing today!

  43. I made my first quilt when I was about 11/12. For my Barbies. Cut rectangles out of fabrics, folded them in half, hand-stitched the square together, stuffed it with old pantihose of my mum's, to make a little pillow and then sewed the little pillows together by hand except for the last row when I was 12, which is when I was allowed to use my mum's old machine. I still have that doll quilt.

  44. I began making my first quilt when I was about ten. My grandma bought me two colors of fabric from JC Penney when they had fabric. It was a blue calico and a blue and white gingham check. I began stitching the squares by hand, and then gave it up. Years later, I finished the quilt and sent it away with my newborn daughter as she went to her adoptive parents. I was 18. It was made with love, but not with much skill.

My daughter is now 32, and still has that quilt. Her mom had to completely re do it, as she slept with it every night and it wore out. I was so touched to see the quilt in her rocking chair in her living room when I was able to visit her last year.

  45. I made my first quilt in 2014, I had been in a sewing bee for 2013 and after everyone sent me their blocks, well I just had to make it a quilt, but I don't really like doing big quilts, I'm more of a mini quilt or pillow or bag fan :)
